The Role of the Educator in a Healthcare Institution: An Experience Report from the Municipality of Piracuruca - Piauí

Abstract

Hospital Education is an important field of practice in non-school settings, aimed at ensuring the right to education for children and adolescents receiving medical care or who are hospitalized. The objective of this study was to understand the functioning of Sectors I and II and to analyze the contributions of the pedagogical practices developed in these settings to the academic training of education students. The research was qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and applied in nature, utilizing bibliographic, documentary, and field research methods.These experiences took place as part of the course “Pedagogy in Non-School Settings,” allowing students to observe the institution’s daily routine and engage in recreational activities with the children in care. The practices developed contributed to the creation of a more welcoming environment, helping to reduce anxiety, fear, and insecurity regarding health care visits. Furthermore, they highlighted the importance of play as a strategy for welcoming children, fostering interaction, and promoting child development. The experience allowed the students to integrate theoretical and practical knowledge, broadening their understanding of the role of educators in non-school settings. The results demonstrated that educational practice promotes the humanization of services, strengthens emotional bonds, and contributes to the well-being of children and their families. It is understood that Hospital Pedagogy plays a fundamental role in promoting holistic development, inclusion, and the humanization of healthcare settings, constituting a meaningful experience for the professional and personal development of future educators.
