The role of the gut microbiota and alimentation in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome: an integrative review of the last decade

Abstract

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a gut-brain interaction disorder whose complex pathophysiology is intrinsically linked to intestinal dysbiosis. This integrative literature review (2013-2023) analyzed the influence of diet and lifestyle habits on microbiota modulation and gastrointestinal complications. Eighteen original articles were selected and analyzed from the PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases using descriptors related to microbiota, nutrition, and lifestyle. The evidence shows that the "Western Diet," sedentary lifestyle, and chronic stress reduce bacterial diversity and increase intestinal permeability. Conversely, the Mediterranean Diet and moderate physical exercise restore eubiosis and butyrate production, strengthening the mucosal barrier. Lifestyle modification acts not only as an adjunct but as a central therapeutic intervention to restore intestinal homeostasis, making the adoption of multidisciplinary approaches imperative in clinical practice.
