Mathematics and Environmental Education: contributions to critical and sustainable education

This article investigates how the integration of Mathematics and Environmental Education can contribute to the critical development of students, raising their awareness of socio-environmental issues through contextualized activities. This article presents an empirical study conducted in elementary school classes, applying teaching sequences that connect mathematical concepts (statistics, proportionality, modeling) to local environmental issues (water use, waste, consumption). The qualitative and quantitative analysis reveals advances in students' understanding of environmental relationships, as well as challenges and limitations in teacher and institutional engagement. It concludes that the articulation between these two areas is promising for emancipatory educational processes, although it requires adequate teacher training and institutional support.
