Abstract

Intermittent fasting (IF) is a nutritional approach characterized by alternating periods of eating and fasting, which has gained increasing interest due to its potential metabolic and global health benefits. This literature review aimed to analyze the effects of IF on metabolism, chronic disease prevention, and quality of life. The main findings revealed that IF promotes weight loss, improves insulin sensitivity, reduces inflammatory markers, and provides cardiovascular protection. Additionally, IF showed neuroprotective potential and contributed to better sleep quality and mood. The underlying mechanisms include autophagy activation, AMPK pathway modulation, and ketone body production. It is concluded that IF is a promising nutritional strategy, but its implementation should be individualized and monitored by healthcare professionals.
