Resumen

Todos los medicamentos se someten a ensayos clínicos para evaluar su eficacia y seguridad antes de su comercialización; sin embargo, estos estudios presentan limitaciones para detectar eventos adversos raros, a largo plazo o específicos en ciertos grupos. En este contexto, la farmacovigilancia se vuelve esencial, ya que permite el monitoreo continuo de los medicamentos en condiciones reales de uso. Se trata de un conjunto de actividades destinadas a detectar, evaluar, comprender y prevenir eventos adversos, promover la comunicación de riesgos y contribuir al uso seguro y racional de medicamentos y vacunas. Esta revisión destaca la farmacovigilancia como un componente fundamental de la atención sanitaria, esencial para la protección de la salud pública. Se realizó una investigación documental cualitativa, basada en fuentes indirectas y material bibliográfico, mediante una revisión narrativa de la literatura. Los datos muestran que los ensayos clínicos son esenciales para evaluar la eficacia y seguridad iniciales de los medicamentos y vacunas, pero presentan limitaciones, especialmente para identificar reacciones adversas raras, tardías o específicas en ciertos grupos. Por lo tanto, la farmacovigilancia es fundamental, ya que permite el monitoreo en el uso real y la detección de nuevos riesgos. Además de notificar eventos adversos, la farmacovigilancia implica identificar, analizar y prevenir problemas relacionados con los medicamentos, con la participación de diversos actores. Aun así, determinar la causa de las reacciones adversas es complejo, lo que subraya la importancia de fortalecer estos sistemas, capacitar a los profesionales e informar al público para garantizar una mayor seguridad en el uso de medicamentos.
