Conservative treatment with methotrexate for cervical ectopic pregnancy: a literature review

Conservative treatment with methotrexate for cervical ectopic pregnancy has emerged as an effective alternative to surgical intervention. This literature review, based on studies published between 2014 and 2024, examines the efficacy of methotrexate in resolving cervical ectopic pregnancies, highlighting its safety and impact on clinical outcomes. Data analysis shows that methotrexate treatment is successful in approximately 70-80% of cases, particularly when ectopic pregnancies are diagnosed early and beta-hCG levels are low. Adverse effects are generally mild and transient. Continuous monitoring of beta-hCG levels is crucial for assessing treatment response and deciding on potential additional interventions. While methotrexate offers significant advantages, such as reduced recovery time and fertility preservation, further research is needed to fully understand its long-term efficacy and compare it with surgical approaches. Clear protocols and well-defined selection criteria can enhance conservative treatment outcomes.
