Abstract

Cervical cancer is a preventable disease, yet it remains among the most frequent cancers in Brazilian women, which exposes gaps in the screening delivered by Primary Health Care (PHC). This study aimed to analyze nursing strategies addressing the factors that influence women's low adherence to cervical cytology screening in PHC. It is an integrative literature review whose guiding question was built with the PICo strategy. Searches were run in PubMed, SciELO and Oasisbr, covering studies published from 2021 to 2026 in Portuguese and English. Selection, reported according to PRISMA 2020, yielded nine studies, which underwent thematic analysis. Findings were grouped into three categories. The first gathered subjective, sociocultural and informational determinants, such as embarrassment, fear of pain and of the result, lack of knowledge about the purpose of the test and partner interference. The second showed organizational weaknesses, including coverage below the national target, shortage of staff and supplies, lack of privacy and delays in delivering results. The third described nursing responses: continuous health education, user embracement, active search, flexible hours, screening campaigns and nursing consultations with guidance before the procedure. Adherence improves when these actions are combined and adapted to the local territory, rather than relying on isolated initiatives or on women seeking care on their own.
