Abstract

Acute pancreatitis is a potentially severe condition, but few studies have examined mortality trends in Brazil. This study aimed to analyze trends in the national mortality coefficient and the contributions of deaths from each region and sex to that coefficient between 2001 and 2021. An ecological time-series study was conducted using Mortality Information System records and population data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. The national coefficient and its contributions were calculated using the total Brazilian population as the denominator, per 100,000 inhabitants. Trends were assessed using Prais–Winsten regression, with annual percent change (APC) estimates and 95% confidence intervals. There were 67,603 deaths: 41,840 among men, 25,751 among women, and 12 with unknown sex. The national coefficient increased from 1.1167 to 1.7308 per 100,000 inhabitants, a 55.0% increase, with an APC of 2.27% (p = 0.019). Contributions increased in the North, Northeast, South, Central-West, and among women, and were stationary in the Southeast and among men. These findings describe the composition of the national mortality coefficient and do not support comparisons of group-specific mortality rates or risks.
