The humanization of childbirth as a strategy for promoting maternal and child health

The humanization of childbirth has been recognized as an essential strategy for promoting maternal and child health, as it prioritizes practices that respect the physiology of birth, women’s autonomy, and human rights in obstetric care. This study aimed to analyze scientific evidence regarding humanized childbirth care and its contribution to maternal and child health promotion. This is an integrative literature review conducted in the LILACS, SciELO, PubMed, and Scopus databases, using the descriptors “Childbirth Assistance,” “Health Promotion,” and “Child Health,” covering the period from 2021 to 2026. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 11 articles were selected for analysis. The results demonstrated that humanized childbirth care is associated with a reduction in unnecessary obstetric interventions, decreased obstetric violence, strengthening of the mother-child bond, and improvement in maternal and neonatal health indicators. Furthermore, the role of obstetric nursing and the importance of public health policies were highlighted as central elements for implementing this care model. It is concluded that the humanization of childbirth is a fundamental strategy for promoting maternal and child health, requiring continuous investment in professional training, health service organization, and effective implementation of public policies.
