Caring for the future: reflections from a practical activity on child and adolescent health promotion in institutional shelters

This reflective study aims to analyze the experience of a supervised practical activity focused on health promotion with children and adolescents in an institutional shelter, integrating teaching, service, and community in the context of Nursing education. The research, descriptive in nature, was conducted within the Extension Project Integrator course in an institutional care unit in the Metropolitan Region I, using participant observation as the main analysis strategy. This approach allowed students to actively follow, experience, and critically reflect on institutional dynamics, interactions with the population, and the impacts of the actions carried out. The study is ethically supported by Resolution No. 510/2016 of the National Health Council, which exempts research of a reflective, educational, and formative nature without participant identification from ethics committee review. The analysis was organized into two categories: (1) Health promotion in the context of institutional care; (2) Contributions of extension practice to Nursing education and comprehensive care in light of the Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The results show that extension practice is a privileged space for promoting comprehensive care, sensitizing future professionals to social inequalities and the multiple dimensions of the health-disease process. Moreover, it contributes to the development of academic and humanistic competencies essential for Nursing training and practice in contexts of social vulnerability.
