Abstract

Blunt abdominal trauma (BAT) in children is a significant medical concern due to its high incidence and potential for severe complications. This article provides a narrative review of the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and recent advances in the treatment of BAT. We initially address the epidemiological distribution of BAT, highlighting its prevalence in children due to falls, motor vehicle accidents, and sports activities, being more common in boys and school-aged children. The clinical manifestations are primarily characterized by abdominal pain that can range from mild to severe, and in severe cases, signs of hemorrhagic shock. Complications such as internal bleeding and peritonitis pose significant challenges both in clinical management and in the quality of life of the pediatric patient. Diagnostic techniques for BAT include careful physical examination, ultrasound, and computed tomography to identify the extent of the injuries. Recent therapeutic advances are discussed with an emphasis on less invasive approaches, such as active surveillance and embolization for hemorrhage control, in addition to minimally invasive surgical techniques that reduce recovery time and postoperative complications. We conclude that despite progress in treatment, BAT remains a condition with a significant impact on public health, requiring innovative therapeutic strategies and personalized treatment approaches. This study highlights the importance of continuing research to improve diagnostic and therapeutic methods, aiming to enhance clinical outcomes and mitigate complications associated with blunt abdominal trauma in children.
