Abstract

Weight gain during pregnancy is a fundamental necessity for promoting the healthy development of the baby, encompassing various factors such as the growth of the fetus, placenta, amniotic fluid, as well as changes in the maternal body like an increase in the uterus, breasts, blood volume, and accumulation of fat reserves. A narrative literature review was conducted based on a bibliographic search in the PubMed database using the descriptors “Pregnancy,” “Weight gain,” “Prenatal care.” The studies researched were published in international journals, with review articles, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses being selected. Healthcare professionals should offer personalized guidance to pregnant women, ensuring that weight gain is within recommended limits or making adjustments when necessary. During prenatal visits, it is possible to calculate and discuss the weight gain schedule until the next visit, the end of the trimester, or the end of the pregnancy, promoting an integrated approach to maternal and child care. Although guidelines and charts are essential, it is crucial to recognize the challenges in their application, especially given the physical and emotional complexities of pregnancy. Healthcare professionals should approach pregnant women with empathy and respect, avoiding judgments, to encourage adherence to recommendations and reduce risks for both mother and baby.
