Objective: to analyze, in the scientific literature of the last five years, strategies for the prevention and control of multidrug-resistant microorganisms in intensive care units and the challenges faced by the nursing team in this process. Method: integrative literature review carried out in the Scientific Electronic Library Online, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online databases, accessed through the Virtual Health Library, using the health sciences descriptors Cross Infection, Drug Resistance, Multiple, Bacterial, Intensive Care Units, Nursing and Infection Control, combined with the Boolean operators AND and OR, restricted to publications in Portuguese, English and Spanish between 2021 and 2026. Results: eighteen studies were included, predominantly Brazilian, showing hand hygiene, contact precautions associated with microbiological surveillance, care bundles for invasive devices, rational antimicrobial use and continuing education as central strategies for prevention, while also revealing low adherence among professionals, work overload, inadequate staffing and fragile institutional surveillance as the main challenges. Conclusion: nurses play an articulating role in the prevention and control of multidrug-resistant microorganisms in intensive care, and investment in continuing education, adequate staffing and strengthening of institutional infection control programs is necessary to reduce the spread of these pathogens and improve the safety of critically ill patients.
