Abstract

Mental health has become a central concern for public health systems due to the increasing prevalence of psychological distress, common mental disorders, and the social consequences associated with mental suffering. Primary healthcare represents a strategic setting for mental health promotion, early identification of needs, prevention of severe conditions, and coordination of comprehensive care. This academic essay discusses the challenges involved in providing mental health care within primary healthcare, emphasizing reception practices, accessibility, humanized approaches, and integration with healthcare networks. The discussion analyzes theoretical perspectives regarding community-based mental healthcare, examines organizational and professional challenges, and explores strategies for strengthening comprehensive mental health practices. The essay argues that effective mental healthcare in primary healthcare requires qualified professionals, interdisciplinary collaboration, psychosocial approaches, community participation, and institutional commitment to overcoming fragmented models of care. Strengthening primary healthcare responses is essential for promoting equity, reducing stigma, and ensuring continuous and person-centered mental health support.
