The Lichtenstein technique, introduced in the 1980s, is a widely used approach for treating primary and recurrent inguinal hernias. This article reviews the effectiveness of this technique compared to other surgical approaches, such as the Shouldice technique and laparoscopic techniques. The Lichtenstein technique is known for its ability to reduce hernia recurrence rates and provide relatively quick postoperative recovery with less pain. The use of a prosthetic mesh to reinforce the abdominal wall is a key feature that distinguishes this technique from others. The analysis of associated complications, such as infections and chronic pain, is also discussed, emphasizing the importance of mesh choice and surgical precision. A review of recent clinical studies reveals that the Lichtenstein technique is effective in most cases of primary and recurrent hernias, although some concerns about long-term complications and mesh selection remain. The article concludes that despite these concerns, the Lichtenstein technique remains a valuable option for inguinal hernia treatment, offering significant benefits in terms of reduced recurrence and patient recovery.
