Epidemiological profile of older adults with syphilis in brazil from 2020 to 2024

The increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among the older population has become an important challenge for Brazilian public health, especially given the growing number of syphilis cases in recent years. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological profile of syphilis cases among older adults in Brazil from 2020 to 2024. This is a quantitative, descriptive study based on secondary data obtained from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN), made available by the Department of Informatics of the Brazilian Unified Health System (DATASUS), through the TABNET platform. During the study period, 64,403 cases of syphilis were reported among individuals aged 60 years or older. A growth in notifications was observed between 2020 and 2023, followed by a decrease in 2024, possibly related to incomplete consolidation of recent data. Most cases occurred in the Southeast region, followed by the South and Northeast regions. Males accounted for the highest number of notifications. The age group of 60 to 69 years concentrated the highest frequency of cases, as well as self-declared White individuals and those with low educational levels. A high frequency of records classified as unknown/blank was also identified, highlighting limitations in data quality. The results reinforce the influence of social, behavioral, and healthcare factors on the vulnerability of older adults to STIs and reveal weaknesses in prevention actions, health education, and approaches to sexuality. It is concluded that syphilis remains a relevant public health problem among older adults, requiring the expansion of strategies for sexual health promotion, prevention, and early diagnosis.
