Abstract

Diabetic neuropathy, a prevalent and complex complication of diabetes mellitus, results in intense and debilitating chronic pain, posing a significant challenge for patients and healthcare professionals. This article reviews therapeutic approaches for the treatment of chronic pain associated with diabetic neuropathy, highlighting both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Tricyclic antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and opioids are widely used, despite their adverse effects and the need for continuous monitoring. Physical therapies, such as physiotherapy and aerobic exercise, and complementary therapies, such as acupuncture and meditation, also play crucial roles in pain management. The effectiveness of these approaches varies, requiring personalized treatment based on individual patient characteristics. Strict glycemic control and early intervention are essential to prevent the progression of neuropathy and minimize chronic pain. Future research is necessary to optimize therapeutic strategies and better understand the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of diabetic neuropathy. This study provides a comprehensive and updated overview of therapeutic strategies, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary and personalized approach to improving patients' quality of life.
