Hemovigilance in nursing care in intensive care: an integrative literature review

Introduction: Hemovigilance monitors the entire blood cycle, aiming to prevent and report adverse events. In the intensive care unit, adherence of professionals to transfusion therapy in the care of critically ill patients is essential, and nurses play a central role, being responsible for the safe execution and active surveillance of the transfusion process. Objective: To obtain and compile information on hemovigilance in nursing care in intensive care settings according to scientific publications from 2020 to 2025.Methodology: This is an Integrative Literature Review (ILR), in which the search of publication sources was conducted between May and June 2025 in the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), and the Nursing Database (BDENF), using the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS): Hemovigilance, Transfusion reactions, Nursing. Results and Discussion: In Brazil, regarding blood transfusions, an increase of 2.9% was observed over the last five years, totaling more than three million procedures performed annually. The appropriate management of transfusion reactions requires integrated action by medical and nursing teams, considering that these are undesirable events, often preventable. Conclusion: Hemovigilance is still poorly applied in hospital practice, especially among nurses, due to lack of training and work overload.
