Factors associated with the high prevalence of off- label use of medicines in pediatric: an integrative review

The prevalence of off-label use of medications in pediatrics is a worrying and complex issue that involves different factors. The present study had the general objective: Investigate the factors associated with the high prevalence of off-label use of medications in pediatrics. It was developed through an integrative review, using the databases: Pubmed, Scielo and Lilacs, using some inclusion and exclusion criteria. Six studies were included in the final sample as a result of this review. The articles discuss the prevalence and factors associated with the off- label use of medications in pediatrics. They address different aspects, such as scientific evidence, reasons and risks of off-label use, choice of unlicensed drug therapy, safety and ethical issues, clinical studies, prevalence of prescriptions and potential risks and benefits. It was evident that the off-label use of medications is a frequent phenomenon in pediatric practice, with significant prevalence rates.
