Epidemiology in Public Health: a narrative review

Epidemiology is the backbone of public health, providing the methodological framework for studying the distribution, frequency, and determinants of diseases in populations. This narrative review synthesizes the literature to critically analyze the fundamental concepts, methodological designs, practical applications, and current challenges of the discipline. It highlights its fundamental role in health surveillance, outbreak control, indicator-based health planning, and emergency response. The analysis reveals that, despite methodological advances to mitigate biases, challenges such as the heterogeneity of data systems and publication biases persist. It concludes that epidemiology is indispensable for generating evidence to guide effective and equitable public policies, with a growing focus on the social determinants of health and multicausal models. The integration of new technologies in surveillance represents a promising frontier for the discipline.
