Recognizing the main signs and symptoms of Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Abstract

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a severe complication of diabetes mellitus that can lead to adverse clinical outcomes if not diagnosed and treated early. This study aims to identify and describe the main signs and symptoms of DKA, highlighting the importance of early recognition and timely intervention. The research was conducted through an integrative literature review using databases such as MEDLINE, BDENF, and IBECS. Inclusion criteria encompassed articles published in the last ten years and available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Data analysis revealed that common symptoms include hyperglycemia, ketonemia, and changes in mental status, with early intervention being crucial to prevent severe complications. The study's conclusion emphasizes the need for continuous training for healthcare professionals and the implementation of monitoring protocols to improve patient outcomes. These findings contribute to a better understanding and management of DKA, underscoring the importance of constant vigilance and education for early recognition.
