Training health professionals in mental health skills: the role of matrixing

The complexity of mental disorders requires interdisciplinary and integrated approaches, requiring health professionals to develop skills beyond disciplinary boundaries. In this context, matrix support emerges as a fundamental strategy to strengthen the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS), promoting the articulation between specialized services and primary care. This study aimed to analyze the role of matrix support in the construction of interdisciplinary skills among primary care professionals, with an emphasis on the development of technical, collaborative and problem-solving skills for the management of complex cases. An integrative review was carried out, with a search in the EBSCOhost, LILACS and PubMed databases, using the term “matriculation” articulated with the descriptors “professional training” and “mental health”. Fourteen articles in Portuguese and/or English, published in the last five years, available in full online for free, were selected; gray literature and incomplete works were excluded. The results showed that matrix support promotes technical-pedagogical support and collaborative learning, directing unnecessary referrals and facilitating the construction of Singular Therapeutic Projects adapted to individual needs. The importance of horizontal dialogue between teams is highlighted, modifying hierarchies through collaborative relationships. It is concluded that matrix support is consolidated as an essential tool for continuing education and integration of knowledge, aligned with national mental health policies. However, limitations such as the predominance of qualitative studies and the lack of research in rural contexts suggest the need for future research that evaluates long-term impacts and in different socioeconomic realities.
