Neonatal meningitis is a severe infection of the meninges, the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, caused by various pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Early diagnosis is crucial due to the difficulty in recognizing symptoms in neonates and the high morbidity and mortality rates associated with the condition. This study aimed to review current approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of neonatal meningitis, identifying effective practices and areas for improvement. An integrative literature review was conducted, with data collection from indexed databases such as BDENF, MEDLINE, and LILACS. The research highlighted that early disease identification and prompt treatment initiation are key to improving clinical outcomes. The analysis revealed that most cases are diagnosed within the first 24 hours and that methods like cerebrospinal fluid cultures and imaging exams are effective. However, limitations such as variability in exam quality and unequal access to advanced techniques were identified. The conclusions suggest the need for stricter protocols and more training for healthcare professionals to ensure better identification and treatment of neonatal meningitis.
