Understanding the Nursing Management of a public hospital: an experience report

Abstract

The administrative function of the nurse manager is multifaceted and ranges from the management of material and human resources to aspects of leadership and professional development of employees. The objective of this study is to report the experience of nursing students in a technical visit to a large public hospital to interview the nurse manager. This is a descriptive study, with a qualitative approach, of the experience report type, based on the experience of a practical activity developed during the Nursing Care Administration discipline, a curricular component of the undergraduate nursing course at a public university in northeastern Brazil, carried out in the technical visit to a public teaching hospital to conduct an interview with the nurse manager, which took place on April 1, 2024, in which the students conducted a joint interview to understand the functions performed, difficulties, decision-making process and conflict management, and the work dynamics faced by the same. Therefore, the experience of the technical visit and the interview with the nurse manager, provided by the practical activity of the Nursing Administration discipline, highlights the relevance of nursing management in the structural and technical organization of Health Care Establishments (EAS), through the performance of administrative functions, planning, decision-making power and management of conflicts and human resources, as well as the exercise of technical responsibility, based on the ethical principles and values ​​of the profession.
