Nursing Process for critical patients undergoing palliative care in an intensive care unit

Abstract

Introduction: The National Palliative Care Policy has fundamental principles that guarantee the dignity and well-being of patients. Among the indications for adherence to palliative care are life-limiting conditions, severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a notable example. Patients who suffer a severe TBI may have irreversible brain damage, and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is essential for the care of patients in critical conditions, who require constant monitoring and intensive interventions. Methodology: This is a descriptive case study conducted during the month of November 2024, in the context of the activities of the palliative care nursing discipline. A care plan was developed based on the Systematization of Nursing Care (SAE), using the NANDA classifications for diagnoses, NIC for interventions, and NOC for expected results. Results and Discussion: Male patient, 55 years old, single and Catholic, transferred from a high-complexity hospital. The patient was using a metal tracheostomy, feeding via gastrostomy and diuresis via an indwelling urinary catheter. Nursing diagnoses and interventions were developed with a focus on the patient's clinical condition, considering their specific needs and prioritizing actions that promote their recovery and comfort. Conclusion: Palliative care is based on principles that prioritize the patient's well-being and quality of life. Early initiation of palliative care within the ICU allows the patient to be seen and treated in a more humane manner, according to their needs.
