Recurrent hepatic encephalopathy in a patient with alcoholic liver cirrhosis

Abstract

Hepatic encephalopathy is a common complication in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis, negatively impacting their quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the recurrence of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis, identifying contributing factors and proposing strategic interventions to optimize clinical management. A literature review was conducted, analyzing 11 studies published between 2010 and 2023 that addressed the incidence, risk factors, and management strategies for recurrent hepatic encephalopathy. Results indicated that high ammonia levels, inadequate dietary intake, and the presence of comorbidities are associated with recurrence. Furthermore, effective strategies such as lactulose therapy and nutritional support were highlighted as fundamental for improving clinical outcomes. The study underscores the importance of comprehensive management of hepatic encephalopathy to enhance the quality of life for affected patients.
