Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition induced by multiple factors, in particular by microbial plaque, and can result in attachment loss and bone loss. In general, periodontitis begins in the first years of life and can affect the permanent teeth. In this sense, it becomes essential to systematically review studies about the management of periodontitis in deciduous teeth. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is to report treatment options and outcomes for primary teeth that have been affected by periodontitis. The secondary objective of this review is to report whether treatment of deciduous teeth affected by periodontitis can prevent the spread of periodontitis to permanent teeth. The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Ebsco databases were used to collect articles published up to December 2022, in English and related to the theme analyzed, with 15 articles being selected for the study. It appears that, within the limitations of this systematic review, periodontitis in primary teeth is currently treated by extraction or scaling and root planing (SRP) (with or without antibiotic therapy). The included studies showed that treatment with scaling and root planing (SRP) with antibiotic therapy results in a favorable reduction in probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL). Furthermore, extraction and scaling and root planing (SRP) of affected deciduous teeth have the potential to prevent the development of periodontitis in permanent teeth. Studies with clinical interventions are needed to standardize treatment protocols.
