Aging and the Role of Public Policies in Strengthening Primary Health Care

Population aging represents one of the most significant demographic transformations of the contemporary world, generating profound implications for healthcare systems, social policies, and public health planning. The increasing proportion of older adults is associated with greater demands related to chronic diseases, functional limitations, multimorbidity, long-term care needs, and social support. These changes require healthcare models capable of promoting healthy aging, maintaining autonomy, and ensuring comprehensive assistance throughout the life course. Primary Health Care plays a central role in responding to the challenges associated with aging because it represents the main point of access, coordination, and continuity of healthcare. Through preventive actions, health promotion, chronic disease management, and community-based interventions, Primary Health Care can contribute to improving the quality of life of older adults. However, strengthening these services requires effective public policies, adequate resources, qualified professionals, and integrated healthcare networks. This academic essay discusses the relationship between population aging, public policies, and the strengthening of Primary Health Care for older adults. The manuscript explores demographic changes, healthcare challenges, policy responses, and strategies for developing comprehensive and humanized care models.
